Registering a domain: what nobody tells you before you buy

Your domain is the most important digital asset you own: you can change hosting, design and every word of content and it survives — and if you lose it you lose your email, your links and your search-engine history at once. Yet it is usually bought in two minutes without reading.

Choosing the extension

.com remains the default because people type it automatically when they forget. Country extensions (.sy and the like) help when your audience is entirely local and you want a geographic trust signal. New extensions are plentiful and cheap, but many people still distrust them and retype .com by mistake.

Three settings to fix on day one

1. 01Registrar lock: prevents your domain being transferred to another registrar without your approval. Turn it on and leave it on.
2. 02WHOIS privacy: hides your name, phone and email from a public database that automated marketers read. Free with most registrars.
3. 03Auto-renewal and a working email: most domains are lost because the reminder went to an old address nobody opens.

What happens when a domain expires?

Expiry is a journey, not a moment, and each stage costs more than the last:

• Grace period (roughly 0–30 days): site and email stop, but renewal at the normal price is still possible.
• Redemption period (about 30 days after that): recoverable for a redemption fee many times the renewal price.
• Deletion and release: it returns to the market, and a broker may grab it within seconds to resell it to you at a multiple.

This is why auto-renewal is not a luxury. Setting a reminder address you actually read is cheaper than any redemption fee.

The DNS records you will need

• A and AAAA: point the domain at your server's address.
• CNAME: makes a subdomain point at another name — common with external services.
• MX: sets your mail server. Changing it carelessly stops all your email.
• TXT: carries ownership proofs and the SPF and DKIM records that keep your mail out of spam folders.
